Coachella — Indio, California

Coachella is still the festival that gets the most attention every year. Even when people complain about it, they are still talking about it. That tells you everything.

The 2026 festival took place over two weekends, April 10–12 and April 17–19, in Indio, California. This year’s headliners included Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Karol G, and Anyma, with a lineup that also featured artists like The Strokes, Turnstile, The xx, FKA twigs, Iggy Pop, Young Thug, Disclosure, and many more. Jack White was also added as a surprise Weekend 1 performer, giving the festival another major rock moment.

What makes Coachella interesting is that it is not just about the headliners. It has become one of those festivals where the undercard can be just as fun to follow as the biggest names. You get pop, rock, electronic, hip-hop, indie, legacy acts, and surprise moments all in the same weekend.

For most fans, Coachella is not exactly an inexpensive trip. But as far as major festivals go, it still sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Stagecoach — Indio, California

Right after Coachella, the same desert turns into one of the biggest country music weekends of the year.

Stagecoach 2026 ran April 24–26 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, with Cody Johnson, Lainey Wilson, and Post Malone as the headliners. The lineup also included Brooks & Dunn, Bailey Zimmerman, Riley Green, Ella Langley, Counting Crows, Journey, Third Eye Blind, Bush, Ludacris, Pitbull, Diplo, and more.

That is what makes Stagecoach more interesting than a normal country festival. Yes, country music is the heart of it, but the lineup always stretches out into rock, pop, hip-hop, and nostalgia acts too. It almost feels like a country festival made for people who have a lot more than country on their playlists.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival — New Orleans, Louisiana

Jazz Fest is one of those festivals that feels bigger than just a lineup. It is music, food, culture, history, and New Orleans all rolled into one.

The 2026 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival lineup included Eagles, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Kings of Leon, Lainey Wilson, Teddy Swims, Lorde, Jon Batiste, Tyler Childers, Raye, T-Pain, David Byrne, The Black Keys, Nas, Earth, Wind & Fire, Mavis Staples, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Widespread Panic, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and many more.

That is a pretty wild mix, and that is exactly why Jazz Fest works. It is not boxed into one sound. It can be classic rock, soul, jazz, country, blues, funk, gospel, and modern pop all in the same festival.

BottleRock Napa Valley — Napa, California

BottleRock has become one of the more unique major festivals because it is not just built around music. It mixes big artists with food, wine, chefs, and that whole Napa Valley atmosphere.

BottleRock 2026 took place May 22–24 at the Napa Valley Expo, with more than 75 bands across five music stages and a culinary stage as part of the festival experience.

This is one of those festivals that feels a little more grown-up than some of the others, but not in a boring way. It is still a major music festival. It just happens to come with great food, wine, and a setting that makes the whole weekend feel more like a trip.

Governors Ball — New York City

Gov Ball is one of the biggest East Coast festival weekends, and being in New York gives it a different energy than a lot of the camping or destination festivals.

The 2026 Governors Ball takes place June 5–7 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York City. The lineup includes headliners like Lorde, Baby Keem, Stray Kids, Kali Uchis, A$AP Rocky, and Jennie.

Gov Ball is especially good if you like a modern pop, rap, alternative, and indie mix. It is not really trying to be a throwback festival. It feels tied to what is current right now, which makes sense for New York.

CMA Fest — Nashville, Tennessee

For country fans, CMA Fest is one of the big ones.

CMA Fest 2026 runs June 4–7 in Nashville. The official CMA Fest site has the 2026 lineup and schedule posted, with the festival spread across multiple stages and events around the city.

The 2026 lineup includes major country names like Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Ella Langley, Shaboozey, Zach Top, Carly Pearce, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean.

What makes CMA Fest different is that it is not just a field with stages. It is Nashville completely leaning into country music for a few days. For fans of the genre, that is hard to beat.

All Things Go — Toronto, Washington D.C., and New York City

All Things Go has become a really strong festival brand, especially for fans who like pop, indie, singer-songwriter, and artists with passionate fan bases.

For Western New York fans, the Toronto edition is the one that stands out the most. It takes place June 6–7 at RBC Amphitheatre in Toronto, which is a much more realistic trip from the Buffalo area than New York City. The Toronto lineup includes Lorde, Kesha, The Beaches, Wet Leg, Del Water Gap, Holly Humberstone, Rachel Chinouriri, Flower Face, Momma, Jade LeMac, Sofia Camara, and Bella Kay.

That lineup makes a lot of sense for All Things Go. You get huge names like Lorde and Kesha, a great Canadian connection with The Beaches, and a strong mix of indie-pop, alternative, and singer-songwriter artists. It feels modern, emotional, and very connected to the type of artists fans build real communities around.

All Things Go also has 2026 editions in Washington D.C. and New York City later in the year, but for WNY readers, Toronto is probably the one to circle first.

Bonnaroo — Manchester, Tennessee

Bonnaroo has always had its own personality. It is one of the classic camping festivals, and it still feels like one of the big “experience” festivals more than just a lineup.

Bonnaroo 2026 takes place June 11–14 in Manchester, Tennessee. The 2026 headliners include Skrillex, The Strokes, RÜFÜS DU SOL, and Noah Kahan, giving the festival a huge mix of electronic music, indie rock, alternative, and modern folk-pop. The lineup also includes names like Turnstile, Teddy Swims, Kesha, Modest Mouse, Clipse, Alabama Shakes, Four Tet, Vince Staples, Japanese Breakfast, Wet Leg, Yungblud, Major Lazer, Mt. Joy, Geese, and more.

The fun of Bonnaroo is that it usually pulls from everywhere. This year really shows that. You have The Strokes for the indie-rock fans, Skrillex and RÜFÜS DU SOL for the dance-music side, Noah Kahan for the singer-songwriter crowd, and then a deep undercard that stretches into rock, hip-hop, pop, jam, and alternative music.

If you are the type of fan who wants a full weekend and not just a concert, Bonnaroo is still one of the major names to watch.

Electric Forest — Rothbury, Michigan

Electric Forest is one of the biggest destination festivals for electronic music fans, but even that description feels a little too small. The setting is a huge part of the appeal.

Electric Forest 2026 takes place June 25–28 in Rothbury, Michigan.

This is the kind of festival where the lights, art, camping, community, and stages all matter. It is built for fans who want the whole immersive weekend. If you are mainly into guitars and traditional bands, it might not be the first festival you think of. But as a major music festival experience, it absolutely belongs in the conversation.

The lineup includes ILLENIUM, Excision, GRiZ, Chris Lake, Kaskade, Disco Lines, The String Cheese Incident, Sammy Virji, Levity, ISOxo, LSDREAM, Purple Disco Machine, Shpongle, Passion Pit, DJ Diesel, T-Pain, Madeon, Channel Tres, Bob Moses, ALLEYCVT, and Ganja White Night.

Newport Folk Festival — Newport, Rhode Island

Newport Folk is not the biggest festival in terms of massive pop spectacle, but it might be one of the most important festivals in American music history.

The 2026 Newport Folk Festival takes place July 24–26 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Tickets are already sold out, with the festival directing fans to the official waitlist and fan-to-fan exchange. That says a lot about what Newport Folk still means to music fans. The lineup includes Hayley Williams & Friends, Courtney Barnett, Deer Tick & Friends, Fruit Bats, Hot Tuna, Lucy Dacus, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Cat Power, Lizzy McAlpine, Punch Brothers, The Lumineers, Vulfpeck, Brandi Carlile, Brandon Flowers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Fearless Flyers, Tom Morello, CMAT, Kathleen Edwards, and more. The festival notes that its lineup is a rolling lineup and artists are subject to change.

This is also the same festival where Bob Dylan turned music upside down in 1965. Dylan plugged in with an electric band at Newport Folk, and whether people loved it or hated it in the moment, it became one of those music-history moments that still gets talked about decades later. That history gives Newport Folk a different kind of weight. It is not just another festival on the calendar. It is a place where music has actually shifted.

That is what makes Newport Folk special. It still feels rooted in songwriting, collaboration, folk tradition, and artists taking chances. The 2026 lineup has a little bit of everything, from Brandi Carlile and The Lumineers to Tom Morello, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Lucy Dacus, Courtney Barnett, and Tedeschi Trucks Band. It is not a festival built around flash. It is built around songs, history, and moments that feel like they could only happen there.

Lollapalooza — Chicago, Illinois

Lollapalooza is still one of the biggest city festivals in the country.

Lollapalooza 2026 takes place July 30–August 2 at Grant Park in Chicago. The 2026 headliners include Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Lorde, Olivia Dean, John Summit, Jennie, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The xx. The lineup also includes Turnstile, Little Simz, Wet Leg, Freddie Gibbs, Clipse, Lil Uzi Vert, The Neighbourhood, Beabadoobee, Ethel Cain, Yungblud, and more.

Lollapalooza has always been interesting because it started with a very alternative-rock spirit, but over time it became a giant multi-genre festival. The 2026 lineup really shows that. You get pop, alternative, rock, rap, dance music, indie, and some Chicago hometown pride with John Summit headlining.

Grant Park gives it that big-city festival feel, and Chicago in the summer is a pretty great bonus.

HARD Summer — Los Angeles, California

HARD Summer is one of the bigger electronic and dance-focused festivals of the year.

HARD Summer 2026 takes place August 1–2 in Los Angeles, with a lineup that includes artists like Kali Uchis, Charlotte de Witte, Chris Lorenzo, Mau P, Maceo Plex, Tokischa, salute, Brutalismus 3000, and many more.

This one is not really for casual background music. It is built for energy. If you like dance music, electronic music, and festival crowds that are there to move, HARD Summer is one of the major 2026 weekends to know about.

Outside Lands — San Francisco, California

Outside Lands has one of the best settings of any major American festival. Golden Gate Park gives the whole thing a different feel than the typical hot summer festival field.

Outside Lands 2026 returns August 7–9 in San Francisco. The daily lineup includes Charli xcx, Turnstile, GRIZTRONICS, and Labrinth on Friday; The Strokes, The xx, Djo, PinkPantheress, and Dijon on Saturday; and RÜFÜS DU SOL, Baby Keem, Empire of the Sun, Death Cab for Cutie, and Disco Lines on Sunday.

That is a really strong mix. You get modern pop, rock, electronic, indie, and some very festival-friendly names. For fans who like a lineup that does not stay in one lane, Outside Lands is one of the better 2026 festivals.

Louder Than Life — Louisville, Kentucky

For rock and metal fans, Louder Than Life is one of the biggest festivals of the year.

Louder Than Life 2026 takes place September 17–20 in Louisville, Kentucky. The 2026 lineup includes My Chemical Romance, Iron Maiden, Tool, Limp Bizkit, Pantera, Alice Cooper, BABYMETAL, Gojira, Halestorm, Rise Against, A Day To Remember, Pierce The Veil, Papa Roach, Tom Morello, Megadeth, and many more.

This is not a light festival. This is the one for fans who want loud guitars, heavy bands, big crowds, and a lineup that leans fully into rock and metal. There are not many festivals in 2026 with a rock lineup this deep.

Borderland Music & Arts Festival — East Aurora, New York

The 2026 Borderland Music & Arts Festival takes place September 18–20 at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, New York, just outside Buffalo. The lineup includes Jack White, Alabama Shakes, Lord Huron, Pixies, The Head and the Heart, Jesse Welles, Flipturn, Chance Peña, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Andy Frasco & The U.N., Shovels & Rope, Leftover Salmon, Rebirth Brass Band, and a strong group of local and regional artists.

What makes Borderland stand out is that it feels big without losing the local feel. You get major national artists, but you also get that Western New York community atmosphere, with local food, art, vendors, and the setting of Knox Farm. It is not just another festival dropped into a random field. It actually feels tied to the area.

For fans around Buffalo, this is probably one of the easiest major festival weekends to get excited about. You do not have to travel across the country to see a stacked lineup, and the mix of rock, Americana, indie, jam, soul, and roots music fits the Borderland vibe really well.

Shaky Knees — Atlanta, Georgia

Shaky Knees has become one of the best rock and alternative festivals in the country.

The 2026 festival takes place September 18–20 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. The lineup includes The Strokes, Gorillaz, Twenty One Pilots, Turnstile, Geese, Pavement, LCD Soundsystem, Modest Mouse, and more.

This is probably one of the best 2026 festivals for fans who lean toward rock, indie, alternative, and guitar-driven music. It is not trying to be everything to everybody. It knows what it is, and that is a big part of why it works.

Riot Fest — Chicago, Illinois

Riot Fest — Chicago, Illinois

Riot Fest is another major one for punk, alternative, emo, rock, and heavier music fans.

Riot Fest 2026 takes place September 18–20 at Douglass Park in Chicago. This year’s lineup includes Tool, Twenty One Pilots, Pierce The Veil, Alanis Morissette, Morrissey, Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Pixies, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, The All-American Rejects, Nas, Patti Smith & Her Band, Bad Religion, Sex Pistols, Taking Back Sunday, Descendents, and more.

That is a very Riot Fest lineup. You get punk history, alternative rock, emo, metal, hip-hop, and plenty of nostalgia all in one weekend. For fans who like their festivals loud, weird, and all over the place in the best way, Riot Fest is definitely one to watch in 2026.

Sea.Hear.Now — Asbury Park, New Jersey

Sea.Hear.Now has a great identity because it is not just another festival in a field. It is music, beach, boardwalk, art, and surf culture in Asbury Park.

The 2026 festival takes place September 19–20 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The lineup is led by The Strokes and Mumford & Sons, with The War on Drugs, Goo Goo Dolls, The Offspring, Chaka Khan, Pixies, Fontaines D.C., Moby, The All-American Rejects, Shaggy, Men at Work, Ziggy Marley, Susanna Hoffs, and Kim Gordon also listed among the notable names.

That is a really fun lineup. It has newer indie energy, classic alternative names, beach-friendly nostalgia, and enough rock to make it feel like a real music fan’s weekend.

Bourbon & Beyond — Louisville, Kentucky

Bourbon & Beyond has grown into one of the biggest mixed-genre festivals in the country, especially for fans who like rock, Americana, roots, country, and singer-songwriter music.

Bourbon & Beyond 2026 takes place September 24–27 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville. The lineup includes Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews Band, Queens of the Stone Age, Kacey Musgraves, The Red Clay Strays, Hootie and the Blowfish, Goose, Foster the People, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Counting Crows, and more.

This is one of the better lineups of the year if you like your festivals to have real variety without feeling random. Foo Fighters, Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews Band, Queens of the Stone Age, and Kacey Musgraves on the same poster makes a lot of sense for a festival like this.

Ohana Festival — Dana Point, California

Ohana Festival should definitely be on this list, especially for Pearl Jam fans.

The 2026 Ohana Festival takes place September 25–27 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California, and this year is the festival’s 10th anniversary. Eddie Vedder & Friends headline the first night on Friday, while Pearl Jam close out the festival on Sunday. The lineup also includes Maná, Tyler Childers, Billy Idol, Bad Religion, Courtney Barnett, Alabama Shakes, Jon Batiste, Fontaines D.C., Pixies, Rilo Kiley, The Format, Tom Odell, and more.

For a huge Pearl Jam fan, that setup is already a dream scenario. Getting Eddie Vedder & Friends on the first night and Pearl Jam on the final night would be enough to make Ohana the most exciting festival of the year. But this one feels even bigger because Pearl Jam are expected to reveal their new drummer when they take the stage at Ohana, making it the first real look at a new era for the band. This will be their first gig since Matt Cameron’s departure.

That makes Ohana feel less like a normal festival appearance and more like a major Pearl Jam moment. Matt Cameron was behind the kit for 27 years, so seeing the band step into whatever comes next is a big deal. Add in the beach setting, Eddie Vedder’s deep connection to the festival, and the 10-year anniversary of Ohana itself, and this becomes the kind of weekend big Pearl Jam fans will definitely want to try to attend.

Austin City Limits — Austin, Texas

Austin City Limits is one of the major fall festivals, and the two-weekend setup gives it that extra big-event feel.

ACL 2026 takes place October 2–4 and October 9–11 at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The 2026 lineup includes Charli xcx, The xx, Lorde, Twenty One Pilots, Skrillex for Weekend One, Kings of Leon for Weekend Two, Turnstile, The War on Drugs, Bleachers, Blood Orange, Lykke Li, and more.

ACL is one of those festivals that usually does a good job balancing big mainstream names with artists that music fans are actually excited about. It is not just a pop festival, not just a rock festival, and not just an indie festival. It sits somewhere in the middle, and that is why it has stayed so popular.

Festivals Taking 2026 Off

A couple of major names are worth mentioning because fans may be looking for them.

Boston Calling is not holding a 2026 festival and is instead pointing toward a return in 2027.

When We Were Young is also taking 2026 off, with the festival saying it will return to Las Vegas in October 2027.

That does not mean either festival is gone for good. It just means 2026 is a pause year for both.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 festival season is packed, and what stands out most is how much variety there is.

If you want pop and spectacle, Coachella, Gov Ball, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and ACL all have plenty to offer. If you want country, Stagecoach and CMA Fest are the big ones. If you want rock and metal, Louder Than Life, Shaky Knees, Riot Fest, Sea.Hear.Now, and Bourbon & Beyond are probably the ones to watch. If you want something more rootsy or historic, Newport Folk and Jazz Fest still feel special.

If you are in Western New York, Borderland is another one to circle. It brings a real national festival feel to East Aurora while still keeping that local, community-driven personality that makes it feel different from the bigger city festivals.

For Pearl Jam fans, Ohana might be one of the most exciting festivals of the entire year. Eddie Vedder & Friends headlining the first night and Pearl Jam closing the final night would already make it a dream weekend. But with Ohana celebrating its 10-year anniversary and Pearl Jam expected to reveal their new drummer there, it feels even bigger. This could be the first real look at a new era for one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Not every festival is realistic for every fan. Travel, hotels, tickets, food, and everything else can add up fast. But even if you are just following from home, festival season is still one of the best ways to see where music is right now.

We really hope this 2026 Major Music Festival Guide was helpful.

As always, support live music.
