Zach Bryan’s “Lies”: The Heartbreak Behind His Lana Del Rey Duet

Share this:

Zach Bryan and Lana Del Rey make an interesting pairing on “Lies.” His rougher delivery and her soft, dreamy vocals give the song two distinct personalities, and I really like how they come together. With piano and strings surrounding them, it’s a beautiful-sounding song with a much more complicated relationship underneath.

What “Lies” Is About

To me, “Lies” is about wanting to believe someone loves you so badly that you’re willing to accept reassurance you don’t entirely trust. There’s an awareness that something is wrong, but being close to that person still feels better than the alternative.

Zach’s opening asks for love and the promise that someone will stay. Lana’s verse introduces doubts about whether those promises ever meant what she thought they did. I hear both sides wanting to feel secure in a relationship that keeps giving them reasons to question it.

The most interesting turn comes later, when the song asks for honesty even if it means facing a goodbye. That sounds like a moment of clarity: accepting that a painful answer might be better than another empty promise.

Then the chorus returns to wanting the lies.

My interpretation is that neither feeling completely wins. Sometimes life is complicated and there’s not always an easy answer.

The Story Behind “Lies”

“Lies” had been taking shape publicly for months before its official release. Zach shared an early piano-led preview in March 2026, and fans initially referred to it as “Tell Me Your Lies.”

There’s a nice bit of history behind Lana’s involvement, too. Zach had covered her song “Video Games” in 2025. Going from performing her music to recording an original song together makes this collaboration especially interesting.

The track was recorded at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, the studio owned by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Zach produced it alongside Jamie McLaughlin and Eddie Spear.

The finished version expands that early piano setting with strings and the addition of Lana’s voice. It gives the song a fuller atmosphere while keeping the emotional focus on the two singers.

“Lies” Song Review

The vocals are the biggest draw for me. Zach brings an urgency to the song that makes the requests for reassurance sound increasingly vulnerable. Lana approaches it with a gentler delivery, but there’s plenty of hurt in that softness. Their differences give you something to follow as the song moves between them.

The piano gives the melody room to breathe, while the strings bring a sweeping quality that brings a nice atmosphere to the recording.

Lana’s entrance also gives the song a welcome change in perspective. Hearing another voice express those doubts makes the relationship seem more complicated. By the time they come together, the chorus carries the weight of both performances.

And it’s a chorus that’s easy to get caught up in. The melody pulls you in before you’ve necessarily stopped to consider the heaviness of the lyrics.

The chorus also obviously brings Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies” to mind, for anyone who knows that song. That connection makes Lana feel like an especially good fit here. “Little Lies” has such a memorable female vocal presence, and while Lana has her own distinct style, I love hearing her bring that presence to this duet with Zach.

Where It Fits on Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs

“Lies” is the third track on Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs, following “Lodi When” and “Robot Killed the Working Man.” Its piano-and-strings arrangement brings a different atmosphere into the opening stretch of the eight-song EP.

I like hearing Zach explore a setting like this. His voice still has that familiar roughness, but Lana’s presence changes the character of the recording. There’s room for both artists to sound like themselves, which is what makes a collaboration worth hearing.

I really enjoy this whole EP, and each song offers something different to come back to. “Lies” brings a beautiful duet into the mix, with Zach and Lana’s voices giving it a charm all its own.

Final Thoughts

Zach Bryan and Lana Del Rey together is a pairing I’d happily hear more of. I love the contrast in their voices, and the piano and strings give them a beautiful setting to sing over.

“Lies” is an easy one to get caught up in and sing along with, even if I’m leaving Lana’s parts to her. Hopefully this isn’t the last time these two share a song.
